Last weekend I had the pleasure to visit Viet Kitchen, the city’s newest Vietnamese restaurant which opened last August in Eixample. Now I’m often talking about how I love Asian food because of its taste, its healthy ingredients and its vegetarian options (and also, I have to admit, because I fell in love with Asia on my trip there two years ago). However, the truth is I have a very small list of my go-to places and I’m not really open to try new ones. Well, I’m so happy I did! Because Viet Kitchen serves real, Vietnamese food that is authentic and different from the standard you find in many Vietnamese restaurants in the city.
Its owners are Emanuele and Hoang – lovely, down to earth people who are all about making tasty food to enjoy in a friendly atmosphere. Hoang’s dishes, inspired in his mother’s recipes, will give you a real taste of Vietnam!
Why I love it
First of all, because of its authentic dishes. I love the fact that they are inspired in Hoang’s mother’s recipes and made in-house using fresh ingredients.
For me it’s also important that you can eat very healthy here – we went there on a Sunday after an extremely food-packed weekend, so we wanted to keep it healthy, and we had a lot of tasty options to choose from. They also have lots of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options – so whatever your needs are, you’ll find the right one for you!
Must-tries
These are the dishes we went for:
– Smoky chicken skewer with peanut sauce
– Fresh spring rolls with tofu & vegetables
– Chicken Pho: Vietnam’s most popular dish, a hot noodle soup with chicken and herbs
– Shrimp curry: amazing taste, soft coconut milk and the tingle of the herbs
– Dessert: banana pudding with coconut cream and tapioca pearls, and Viet Kitchen’s signature dessert, curiously green and creamy, made with cream, pandan and coconut
Now, as delicious as everything was, the dessert was really my favorite part. I have to say I love Asian and Vietnamese food, but for me it’s always been about the main courses. This time, however, I was so pleasantly surprised by the desserts, which I had never found before in other Vietnamese restaurants I’ve been to.
The menu is so varied, with original options which sound super good so we’ll have to come back to taste others, such as their bahn mi sandwiches (especially the vegan one, made with walnut mushroom paté!) and their Vietnamese crepe, which I am so intrigued about.
