Fiestas de Gracia is, together with La Mercé, one of the biggest street events in Barcelona. The event takes place during a whole week starting on August 15th each year and, although officially it’s the party of the Gracia district, crowds from all over the city join to admire the street decorations, experience local traditions, enjoy the lively bars and party all day and night long.
History Of Fiestas De Gracia
Gracia was founded in the 17th century in the area between the Old City and the Collserola mountains. It remained a town of its own, separate from Barcelona, until 1897. Today Gracia attracts lots of visitors because of its bohemian atmosphere, with its squares, its bars and its unique shops.
The first celebrations in Gracia that we have record of were held in August 15th 1817 in honor of the Assumption of Mary, when a procession took place.
What Happens During Fiestas De Gracia?
- Street decorations: the neighborhood’s streets and balconies are decorated using recicled materials. Normally each little part of the neighborhood has their own theme and they tend to be very colorful and beautiful, as the people spend a lot of time working on them. At the end of the event there is a contest to choose the best decorations.
- Concerts: there are different stages around the neighborhood hosting free concerts
- Traditional dances
- Castellers: literally human towers, typical of festivals in Catalonia
- Correfocs: a breathtaking show of fireworks and costumes, usually devils
- Religious events
- Parades
- Exhibitions
- Wine and beer tastings

Fiestas De Gracia App
Yes, there’s an app to help you discover all the things you can do at the fiestas each year. My favorite thing about the app is the fact you can see a map of the different art installations (including your location on the map), as well as explanations to understand what you’re visiting!
